I did something tonight that I haven't done in years! Seriously. Over 20 years, in fact.
I played women's basketball. Yes, you read that right. Women's basketball. Not by choice, but I did - so when I get to heaven, surely suffering through a game gets me some brownie points, right?
Here is how it went:
I sent Ster to scouts at 7 p.m. at the Church while I had a Cub Committee meeting. I was in my work clothes (that are quite loose at the end of the day) and pink socks. Since I didn't read my email correctly, I didn't realize scouts was at 4:15 today. I opened up the door at 7:05 to see his Scout leader there. Oops. So for the next hour, I worried and stewed about the fact that Ster had not come home yet. I was told that one of the leaders' husbands was at the Church with basketball, so I tried to assure myself that he was having fun watching/playing up there.
As soon as we finished the meeting, I grabbed my slippers and hurried up to the Church to find him. I found him all right. Then the Relief Society President found me! She begged and pleaded and guilted me into playing. They only had 3 players and would forfeit if I didn't play. I kept pointing at my slippers and telling her that I CAN NOT play basketball! I can't dribble. I can't shoot a basket. She kept telling me that they needed me and I'd do fine. I finally gave in and apologized in advance for not playing very well and told them that I was basically another body so they wouldn't forfeit.
And after jogging up and down the court a couple of times, I realized a few very important things:
1 - I DO NOT like to have people flinging their arms in the air right next to my face.
2 - I DO NOT like to be pushed around.
3 - I DO NOT like to push people around.
4 - I CAN run in slippers on a slick floor and not slide ALL the time. I just CAN'T try to get a loose ball because I will slide.
5 - I get all out-of-sorts when someone comes flying by me and I see them out of the corner of my eye (must be my old lady eyes).
6 - That I am soooooo out of shape, but I could manage 3 8-minute workouts =)
I'm proud of myself for playing basketball and doing something I NEVER thought I'd do again. But unless I lose my mind, I won't be back next week! (and I hope they don't call me because I'm afraid I'd feel guilty for turning them down!)
You had me laughing out loud! That is exactly how I felt when I was called to coach the YW this year. I think basket ball is a mean sport-all that stealing and blocking and pushing.
ReplyDeleteI can't believe you played in your slippers! (Although tonight I played in my stockin' feet.)
