Itchy Itchy Itchy

Remember my rash?  Yeah, well it didn't go away.  It got worse for a while.  Painfully worse.  It covered a good part of my neck.  Nothing worked to get rid of it.  I tried to find clothes that could cover it up - but it didn't help when I itched and itched and itched and it got puffy and even redder.

So I went back to the doctor on Monday - and all we can tell is that I've had an allergic reaction to something.  Don't know if it was the swimmers ear drops or the antibiotic or what.  He gave me 5 more drugs to take - a new antibiotic, steroid, cream, allergy pills, and something else that to me seems like it would be similar to an allergy pill.  Walgreens likes me this month.

I had hoped that my itch and rash would go away.  The rash on my neck is almost cleared up - but now I'm getting it on my wrists.  Seriously?  My ears still itch, my neck still itches, my cheeks are itching and now my wrists.  I have racked my brain trying to find what I have done differently lately.  It all started after I ate a hazelnut - but the benedryl cleared that up.  I've thought that maybe I've had a reaction to the benedryl - because the itchy ears started after that.  But I haven't had benedryl since last sunday and the rash stayed bad for a few days after that.  I've thought it could be the ear drops, but I quit using those when I had the dental work done.  We thought it could be the antibiotic, but I've taken that before.  The doctor didn't know what to tell me.

I better figure it out soon - preferrably before I scratch the skin off my body!

Basketball

I haven't shared this story yet, but playing basketball reminded me.  Maybe it was better that I had forgotten.

When I was in Young Womens (years and years ago), I loved to play basketball.  I couldn't wait until I could play!  When I was a Beehive, our ward was so large there were three teams.  Was I any good?  NO!  But I had a blast playing.  I couldn't score and I couldn't do defense and I couldn't really dribble up and down the court without concentrating - but I had a ball.  Well, I'm sure I wasn't as bad as I remember, but I can tell you I wasn't a good player.  It was fun for me.

We moved from AF to PG when I was a Mia Maid - to a ward full of athletic girls who would play to win and not have fun.  But me and my sister were still stupid enough to want to join the team - and since they can't tell you no, we were players =)

We didn't realize at first how competitive they were.  Holy Cow!  We'd play (or attempt to play) but we didn't make baskets and we sure didn't keep the other team from making baskets.  And since our ward (probably all wards were the same) was very, very competitive we quickly lost the desire to play.  But we loved to watch.  We were their cheerleaders.  Cheerleaders they had to put in for a couple of minutes.  I'm sure they cringed when we had to go in.  The last games we played (in fact, I think it was the last year they had regionals - because I remember playing in AF for the last few games), my sis and I would try to get out of going in.  We'd tell them it was okay, we didn't want to play - we've even wave our hands telling them no way.  We did NOT want to lose the game for them.

Our ward won whatever it was called.  Regionals?  Who knows.  Who cares.

In Young Womens on the next Sunday, the "coach" had the entire team stand up and then tossed candy bars at the girls thanking them for playing and blah blah blah.  She made me and my sister stand up until the very last.  Then she made fun of us.  Really.  She made such a big joke about the fact that we didn't want to go in.  I can remember to this day the expression on her face when she'd make fun of us telling her we didn't want to play.  I can remember her arm movements making fun of us.  It was HUMILIATING.

I have not played basketball since.  Seriously.  I managed to get out of it in school.  I didn't play again.  I think that is why I won't do anything that may cause me embarrassment - I never want to be teased like that again.

So last Thursday was a pretty big deal to me.  I was so embarrassed to be playing in slippers and pants that I had to keep tugging up (I'd tug my pants up, pull my shirt down, and attempt to pull the tight jersey down).  I'm still shocked that I played.  But I do have to admit I did KIND OF have a LITTLE BIT of fun.  For a couple of minutes, I really wanted to try to go after the ball.  My feet slipping out from under me and me landing on my hands and knees and (I'm sure) flashing a heck of alot of undies to those behind me pretty much cured me of wanting to go after another loose ball.  (Embarrassing!)

But I won't be answering my door or phone tomorrow night - it is Women's Basketball night!

Whew!

I am not an optimistic person.  I plan on the worst possible thing happening but hope it goes well.  Don't want to be disappointed.

So, when our furnace started to act up last night I planned on the worst.  Like having to replace the furnace today.  Luckily we have a fireplace that can heat the house in case of problems.  Like last night.  I was up until 2 a.m. getting the house warm (for the life of me I CAN'T get a hot fire going like Tim can) so that I wouldn't worry all night about Ster getting cold.  The house did warm up - but was at 69 degrees when we woke up.  I'm cold all the time now, so that was wayyyyy to cold for me.  A year ago that would have been fine.  Not now.

So I called my boss and asked for the day off.  I figure if it did get fixed, I'd be too cranky after only getting 4 hours of sleep.  I need my sleep so I'm not cranky.  And 4 hours = cranky mommy.

We were blessed.  By 9:30 a.m. and $100 later and a clean sensor, the furnace was up and running and warming our home.  Then I took a very short nap.  Hopefully that helps because.....

tonight is Pack Night.  The very first Pack Night that I'm in charge of.  I'm not really looking forward to it.  Me and a bunch of kids?  It'll be interesting.  Luckily, we don't have to be there that long!

Every. Stinkin. Time.

I've mentioned that something bad happens every stinkin' time that Tim is gone, right?

Well, I thought it was the stove this time - you know, me steppin' on it and breaking that top?

Nope.  I'm kinda thinkin' that we may be having some furnace issues.  About 30 minutes ago I noticed it was getting kinda cold upstairs.  So I check out the temperature.  Hmmm.  It was a bit low.  We've mentioned getting our furnaced tuned up - but did we do it?  Nope.  Kinda wishing we had.

I'm sitting here listening to the furnace go on and off.  And when it is on, the air certainly ain't warm!

Oh, it is going to be a very long night.

Two weeks

The countdown is ON!  Tim will be home no later than 2 weeks from today.  And it is about time!

This has been a VERY long deployment.  Okay, so it hasn't been the longest deployment - but it sure seems like it.  The first two weeks everything went so smoothly.  I was amazed.  No arguing.  No pushing the limits.  No sassiness.  The third week - not so smooth.  This last week - very rocky.  He has got the attitude that I can't make him do what he doesn't want to do.  He is talking back over everything.

I can tell the next two weeks are going to be a blast at our house!

Quilts

So, if you've been reading my blog for awhile, you'd understand that I now have a passion for sewing.  I love it!  I love love love looking at quilting blogs - love the tutorials, love the quilts, love the colors, love the fabrics.  I love modabakeshop.com because I love to print off the tutorials I think I'd make.  If you look at my old blog (the one that is still private), I have all of my blogs that I stalk on there.  And I just added a TON of quilting blogs there.  That is what I do when I have a few minutes.  Stalk and dream.

My problem is that I just don't have enough money or time to make the quilts I want.  Good quality fabric can be expensive!  Unless you buy the Christmas discounted fabric - which I did but now don't want to use the material because they are too cute to use - I'm looking at money I just don't have for fabric.

So I continue to dream.  And make a list of those people I want to make quilts for.  And keep visiting the fabric shops to drool over the material.

However, I did join a quilt block thingy.  For $4 a month, I get material to make four 10 inch blocks, which are then sewn together.  At the end of December, I'll have a twin size quilt top - unless I pay $3 per 10 inch block and make enough for a queen size top (which is what I'm going to do, I think).  Anyway, here is my first set of blocks. I love the colors (I'm wayyyyy into red, white and blue fabrics).

I can't wait to finish it!  Should have known - I am an impatient person sho doesn't like to wait!  Now I can't finish this until the end of the year!  But I'm way excited for it.

(Oh, I just saw the hand print on the fridge!  The draw back to stainless steel appliances:  fingerprints, handprints, smudge marks.  That drives Tim and I crazy!  Especially Tim - he'll clean it daily if he has to!)

Shocking!

I did something tonight that I haven't done in years!  Seriously.  Over 20 years, in fact.

I played women's basketball.  Yes, you read that right.  Women's basketball.  Not by choice, but I did - so when I get to heaven, surely suffering through a game gets me some brownie points, right?

Here is how it went:

I sent Ster to scouts at 7 p.m. at the Church while I had a Cub Committee meeting.  I was in my work clothes (that are quite loose at the end of the day) and pink socks. Since I didn't read my email correctly, I didn't realize scouts was at 4:15 today.  I opened up the door at 7:05 to see his Scout leader there.  Oops.  So for the next hour, I worried and stewed about the fact that Ster had not come home yet.  I was told that one of the leaders' husbands was at the Church with basketball, so I tried to assure myself that he was having fun watching/playing up there.

As soon as we finished the meeting, I grabbed my slippers and hurried up to the Church to find him.  I found him all right.  Then the Relief Society President found me!  She begged and pleaded and guilted me into playing.  They only had 3 players and would forfeit if I didn't play.  I kept pointing at my slippers and telling her that I CAN NOT play basketball!  I can't dribble.  I can't shoot a basket.  She kept telling me that they needed me and I'd do fine.  I finally gave in and apologized in advance for not playing very well and told them that I was basically another body so they wouldn't forfeit.

And after jogging up and down the court a couple of times, I realized a few very important things:

1 - I DO NOT like to have people flinging their arms in the air right next to my face.
2 - I DO NOT like to be pushed around.
3 - I DO NOT like to push people around.
4 - I CAN run in slippers on a slick floor and not slide ALL the time.  I just CAN'T try to get a loose ball because I will slide.
5 - I get all out-of-sorts when someone comes flying by me and I see them out of the corner of my eye (must be my old lady eyes).
6 - That I am soooooo out of shape, but I could manage 3 8-minute workouts =)
I'm proud of myself for playing basketball and doing something I NEVER thought I'd do again.  But unless I lose my mind, I won't be back next week!  (and I hope they don't call me because I'm afraid I'd feel guilty for turning them down!)

Friday

Well, Friday is the lucky day.  Lucky for the oral surgeon who gets my money!  My appointment is for 11 a.m. and I am NOT looking forward to it.

Add that to my lovely rash on my head right now and I am just one happy camper!  Not.

I woke up Tuesday morning with a swollen and itchy and painful ear.  Today it matched my pink shirt.  Knowing that I have to be healthy to go in to have my tooth pulled, I went in to see my doctor yesterday.  Swimmer's Ear.  That is what I was told - which surprised me because the only water I've been around is my shower! Anyway, I have drops that I need to put in my ear and it should go away.  Should.  I certainly hope it goes away because it is definitely swollen - noticably so.  I would show you a picture, but I don't like my picture taken because I'm fat and ugly.  This morning I have a rash on my neck and my other ear is starting to itch.  And I itch all over my body.  Yuck.  I have taken Benedryl the last two nights to help my itching - too bad it doesn't stop the itching al day long.

On the bright side, I've decided that I don't have zits.  All of the red bumps on my face are rashy.  Not zits.

Letter from Jayden

This last year, I started to send packages to Jayden.  Long story.  A story I don't feel like I can tell.  You know - sharing information that is not mine to share (I learned my lesson).

Anywho - I decided to be a better Grandma.  So, for August 13 I (okay - we) sent Jayden a birthday card with some money in it for his birthday and for school.  Not much.  Just a little something to let him know that we love him.  And I got a message from his daddy thanking us for the money and telling us what Jayden would be doing with it.

For Christmas, I didn't really want to send just money.  I want to buy the grandkids presents.  I found the cutest blanket that I snatched up for Kym - but ended up giving it to my adorable niece Lillie.  I hate sending money because it seems so cold.  (However, I LOVE LOVE LOVE getting money for presents - it is so much FUN deciding what to buy).  Anyway, we decided to send presents to Tim's grandkids.

(Note:  I'm not sure if I will do that again - the cost for shipping them was almost as much as the gifts!)

I sent Jayden's gift to his grandparents house - which is where I sent his birthday card/money.  Just before Christmas, my mom sent all the grandkids a card with a small cash gift.  A week later, my mom got a letter from Jayden.  I didn't.

I can't tell you how ENVIOUS I was of my mom and dad.  I so wanted to drive to Spanish Fork right then and there and yank that letter and picture out of their hands and keep it for myself.  She read what he wrote and I admit I got weepy.

Then I started to worry.  What if he didn't get our gift?  I checked online to see that it was delivered - and when I saw it was left on their porch I didn't worry.  They lived in an area I felt the package wouldn't be stolen.  I was going to call - but then I didn't want to seem pushy or "thank you" grabbing.  So I didn't.  I just worried and wondered.

Then it came.  My precious letter from Jayden.  I cried.  I was so excited to get that precious, precious letter.  He liked the gift =)  And he gave us his new address.  Yes, they moved.  That could explain why it took so long to get a thank you from him - and lucky for everyone the new owners of the house were honest enough to send it on.

After crying, I did a happy dance.  Then I cried again.  I miss my Jayden - my little peanut.  It is hard for me to think of him as anything other than my precious 2 1/2 year old grandson.  It has been almost five years since he went back to Texas with his daddy.  Five years!  He is 7 years old now.  7!  And I still get teary eyed thinking about him and missing him.  I can't wait until later this year when we head to Texas (I'm keeping my fingers crossed that nothing else comes up to ruin our trip) and I can see him again.  I know he isn't my little peanut anymore - but I'm still stoked for the visit!

Peace!

Wow.  One weekend of peace and quiet!

Tim gone + Ster gone = momma time!

I am so excited.  Ster agreed to go to my parents house this weekend (although I was thinking more along the lines of ALL weekend until Monday, but I don't think anyone else was thinking that way) and so it is me and my poopy-Duke!

On tonight's agenda:  get all the cleaning and laundry done.

Tomorrow:  sleep in.  eat.  sew.  watch Harry Potter.  relax.  stay up way late.

Sunday:  sleep in.  church.  maybe go get ster?

What a weekend!!!!!

Again?

I swear my luck stinks!

After lots of thought and searching, I decided to buy a cheap sewing machine.  Not one that you'd get at a walmart or kmart, but a cheaper one at a fabric store.  I was at the local quilt shop and noticed a Janome and so I asked the lady about it.  She loves hers and highly recommended it - telling me they were on sale at Hancock Fabric.  So, I ran to the nearest Hancock Fabric store.  No luck.  I called to the other stores - no luck, although one store told me they would be getting two within a week.  So, last Saturday I called around and was lucky enough to have found ONE in stock.  So I grabbed Ster and hurried to Salt Lake to grab it.  It was a pain to get to the store - construction, missing the street, piddle break for Ster.  I was pretty frustrated by the time I got there, but elated when we left.

Here is my new toy:

I had company Saturday, so I didn't have a chance to test it out.  Sunday we still had company and then went to my parents - no chance to test it out until late that night so I only sewed a few lines.  Finally, I used it quite a bit on Monday night.  How exciting!  I love, love, love it.  Its quiet, smooth.  Love it!

Tuesday on the way home from work, I call Ster to let him know I'm heading home.  He informs me that he was using my sewing machine and the black thing got stuck.  Okay, I'm not pleased that he was using it, but the peddle getting stuck wasn't anything to cry about.

Oh no.  I did cry.  Sterling cried.  Because it wasn't the peddle.  It was the black fabric he was practicing on!  He was trying out a new stitch.  And it jammed.  Doesn't help that (1) he was using the wrong foot and (2) he was probably trying to move the fabric when he didn't need to.  Needless to say, I was NOT NOT NOT a happy camper when I found the problem.

I admit.  I yelled.  I screamed.  I stomped my foot.  Ster apologized then got mad and followed my lead by yelling back at me and swearing.  So, off to his room he went for a long time-out while I stewed and yanked and pulled on that stupid fabric.  Oh, the fabric came out - but left all the thread.  this is what I finally pulled out of the machine after I took the metal plate off:

Ster is so very lucky right now.  The sewing machine works great.

Back Row Joes

I'm a back row Joe.  My preferred place to sit is where no one is behind me.  Why?  Because my hearing is messed up.  I can hear sounds - my hearing is great that way - but I don't always understand what is being said.  I should sit on the front row or somewhere up front, but I can't.  If I hear ANY little sound - whether it is someone chewing their gum with their mouth open, clicking a pen, popping knuckles, whispering - then my attention is drawn to that and I can't hear what is being said.  Pathetic.

So, if I'm sitting in class or a meeting and someone starts to whisper, I hear the whispering and then I struggle to hear what I need to hear.  I sit on the back row because I don't have someone right behind me dragging my attention to them.  If they are in front of me, I can't hear the little spspspspsp sounds and I can hear the lesson just fine.  Another BIG pet peeve of mine is being in a meeting and having people continually talking/whispering.  Shut up and listen!  I have a hard time getting my husband and child to sit still in church - it is so annoying!

Really - just shut up and listen!  It is one thing for kids to be noisy - they are kids.  Adults?  There is no excuse.  Shut up and listen.

I'm whining about this because I went to my first Roundtable meeting tonight.  And I so wanted to turn around and tell two ladies to SHUT UP AND LISTEN!  They whispered the ENTIRE time.  They sat right behind me and I swear they maybe heard about ten seconds of the "lesson" the lady was giving.

The lady asked if there were any questions or comments - I almost asked her to repeat what she said because I couldn't hear.  I was annoyed.

Seriously people - SHUT UP AND LISTEN!  You never know if you have another obnoxious Teri near you who can't stop listening to your whispered conversation.

(At least they were only talking about scouts and not anything personal!)

My luck strikes again (continued)

Why is it that every time Tim leaves, something has to happen?  I was already prepared for the windows to be replaced (still haven't heard back on the estimate) and I wanted to replace our stove..........

I am NOT a decorator.  I have no talent for decorating my house.  I can copy - yes, I can do that.  But unless I find something I have fallen in love with that I can copy, it won't happen.  We've been in our house for 7 years.  I can't tell you the number of bare walls.  We do have a few pictures up in the living room and one on the wall over the stairs.  We have a vaulted ceiling with a ledge separating the living room and kitchen.  The first couple of months I was here, there was nothing up there.  Then my sister-in-law made a comment that I needed some greenery up there because it was so bare.  So, the few days before Tim came home from overseas I splurged at Roberts Crafts and did this:

Then, of course, my sister-in-law makes a comment about the forest I had up there.  Seriously?  She criticized what I did?  She didn't know what a blow to my ego that was - I had been pretty impressed.  Yes, it is now in desparate need of updating - but I'm pretty sure that was an okay way to decorate at the time.

Anywho, above our kitchen cabinets there is empty space.  I didn't take a before picture, or I would show you how pathetic it looked.  Tim had brought home a very pretty set of glasses from Turkey.  they were put up there inside each other and bundled all up together.  Plus, they were down a couple of inches from the trim, so you couldn't see much of them.  I also had my mom's pitcher and cups she got when she was first married up there.  It really wasn't pretty.

So, with Roberts Craft closing their doors, I decided to get some styrofoam sheets and put on top of the cabinets to raise the cups up and then I covered the styrofoam with material (which I am going to change out when I find what I want) and strategically placed the glasses up there.  Again, I am not a decorator and this is the best I could come up with (so please don't criticize me and make my ego take another hit!):

This is a close up of the glassware - I'm not liking the material under it
Even though I want to make a few changes, I am pleased that it looks ten times better than it did before.  Imagine all of that scrunched up together.

All of that work lead to this:

A cracked stove top.  Yes.  What you are looking at is a small portion of the crack that now graces stove.  I am sooooo not happy with myself.  As I was placing the cups on top, I stepped on the stove and not the other side of the counter as I thought I had.  I heard the crack and swore.  It runs all along the right hand side.  What an idiot I am!

So, although the oven didn't work very well, at least the stove top did.  Did.  I did try the other side hoping that it would work and wouldn't cause problems and thankfully the other side works.  Thank heavens for that!  So now all we have to do is pay off our fridge this month (our six month interest free time is up) and then purchase a stove with interest free payments for six months.

Of course we are still trying to figure out how to pay for new windows and a new tooth.

At least the stove sort-of works.  It isn't like I plan on cooking another big meal anytime soon.

Oh my!

A spelling error!  How embarrassing =)  I just noticed I made a terrible error in my previous post.  An error that drives me crazy.  I put "hear" instead of "here".  Yikes.

It is ironic that I found that error when I was going to write about spelling errors anyway!

In Sunday School today, our teacher made a few spelling errors on the chalkboard.  And I loved it!  She is an amazing woman - smart, pretty, creative.  So it tickled me pink that she could make a spelling error.  She's not perfect!  YES!
